In the third series of Discovery Channel's Emmy-nominated documentary we return to the Bering Sea to follow the crew of eight crab-fishing boats who have one of the deadliest, most lucrative jobs in the world.Follow the fishing boats as they are dwarfed by the waves of the Bering Sea. For the first time, submersible cameras witness the capture of Alaskan crabs during their migration along the sea floor. But most importantly, meet the men who put their lives on the line in search of modern-day buried treasure: Alaskan crabs.
1. A Tragic Beginning
The boats prepare for the start of the king crab season. The captains make a bet on who can catch their first 100,000 lbs. of crab in the fewest number of pots. The Cornelia Marie leaves Dutch Harbor hoping to catch a break between two storms, leaving the other boats to ride out the storms tied to the dock. The Northwestern tries a new strategy of more and bigger crab pots. The rookie captain aboard the Maverick is indecisive about where to drop his pots. The Ocean Challenger capsizes and puts out a distress call, and only one of the four crew members is located in the water.

2. The Unforgiving Sea
The search for the crew of the Ocean Challenger continues by air and the USCGC Munro. The bodies of two crewmembers are recovered, while the fourth crew member is lost to the sea. The fleet reacts to the loss of the Ocean Challenger. The Northwestern sets its second load of 150 pots, while dealing with a broken hose. The Time Bandit finally sets its pots using herring instead of cod for hanging bait with poor results. After a slow start, the Maverick pulls in full pots and returns to St. Paul to offload. The Cornelia Marie fishes through the night at a fast pace. Rough seas on the Farwest Leader make the greenhorn Ragnil, also the captain's wife, sick, but she pulls through and works the deck after losing a bet on the number of crab pulled up in the first pot of the season.

3. Pain and Paybacks
The Northwestern has bad luck with its second string of 150 pots and decides to fish closer to its first set of pots where they had better luck. Rough seas cause a crewmember aboard the Wizard to have his finger crushed between two pots, requiring professional medical attention at Dutch Harbor. When the Time Bandit also pulls in low crab counts after having to move their greenhorn to the rail due to injury, the captain decides to have a little fun at the expense of the greenhorn. Captain Blake Painter of the Maverick receives a tip on a hot spot to fish from Captain Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie, but when Blake decides to share the tip with another captain, Phil gets his revenge by sabotaging one of the Maverick's pots. The captain's wife, Ragnil, on the Farwest Leader calls the shots on where to set a string and gets full pots in return. The Cornelia Marie breaks off a part of one her propellers and goes to King Cove for emergency repairs.

4. Pain and Paybacks
The fishing aboard the Northwestern is excellent and the crew fills their tanks to the brim. A replacement propeller is flown in for the Cornelia Marie, but repairs are delayed because the propeller is left handed, while the Cornelia Marie's propellers are right handed. Several days later, a second propeller arrives and is installed, allowing the boat to return to fishing. Aboard the Maverick, Captain Blake Painter must fabricate a temporary fix for a broken dog on the pot launcher. On their way to Akutan to offload, Blake spots a Cornelia Marie pot and decides to take revenge by sabotaging the pot, but it causes little reaction on the Cornelia Marie when they retrieve it. On the Farwest Leader, a junior deckhand at the hydraulic controls causes an accident after failing to secure a pot and then breaks the crane line. After poor results, the Time Bandit changes strategy and moves north. On the way, Captain Johnathan Hillstrand observes a deckhand on another boat tying a stack off the side of another vessel. After the crew of the Time Bandit head below for some rest, the man tying the stack is overwhelmed by the 30 foot swells and disappears into the waves. Captain Hillstrand and his crew work quickly to save the fisherman who fell into the sea. Their quick action saves the man from certain death. The fisherman is overjoyed by the swift rescue efforts of the Time Bandit and her crew.

5 . Bering Sea Salvation
Good fortune smiles upon the Time Bandit after the rescue of the man overboard as they pull up very full pots. The Northwestern continues to have good luck after offloading nearly $800,000 in crab. Aboard the Maverick, Captain Painter decides to risk striking out on his own and picks a spot to fish without any advice from other captains, resulting in full pots. The injured engineer aboard the Wizard returns to work the deck. The Farwest Leader pulls up empty pots, but pulls up decent pots after receiving a tip from Captain Hillstrand on the Time Bandit.

6. The Last Lap
The boats rush to pull up their last pots in order to meet their delivery deadlines at the processing plants. Captain Hillstrand of the Time Bandit wins the bet between the captains on the fewest pots pulled to 100,000 lbs. by averaging 70 crabs per pot. The Maverick "rail dumps" several pots thinking that they have reached their quota, but find out they are actually 4,000 lbs. under quota when they offload at Kodiak.

7. New Beginnings
The fleet begins the opilio crab season. The Northwestern goes to pick up their pots stored near St. Paul Island and St. George Island and find that many of their bouys have been damaged by playful sea lions. The Time Bandit heads to their secret opilio fishing spot. At Dutch Harbor, the Farwest Leader loads up on provisions while waiting for the Coast Guard to conduct their inspections and drills. The fish processing boat Stellar Sea's engine room catches on fire, causing it to be towed to Dutch Harbor for repairs.[2] The fire forces the Cornelia Marie and the Time Bandit to change their plans as they are contracted to deliver to the Stellar Sea. Captain Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie decides to dock at St. Paul to wait until the stricken Stellar Sea is repaired, while Captain Andy Hillstrand of the Time Bandit decides to switch to fishing bairdi crab which can be delivered to another processor. A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk from USCG Air Station Kodiak is dispatched to rescue a seriously ill crew member from a fishing boat.

8. Caught in the Storm
The fleet deals with a storm. The Time Bandit continues to fish for bairdi with poor results. The Farwest Leader loads aboard 30 more pots at St. George, departs before the storm hits, and goes fishing for bairdi crab. Aboard the Northwestern the crew thinks their luck has changed when they pull up full pots, but a mechanical problem with the engine forces them to go to St. Paul for repairs. The Stellar Sea is repaired and the Cornelia Marie goes out to fish. The Wizard heads to port for repairs after a wave sheers the gears in the transmission of the forward crane.

9. Crossing the Line
The Northwestern pulls up full pots as the crew tries to make up for lost time. The boat's greenhorn learns that playing pranks on the Deck Boss has its consequences. The deck crew of the Cornelia Marie and Time Bandit are battered by huge waves. Captain Keith Colburn hands over to the Wizard to his brother, Monty, after having to return home due to a family emergency. The boat also picks up a new greenhorn after their first greenhorn injures himself and can not continue, but the new greenhorn finds the work difficult. A wave causes a line to tangle around the starboard shaft of the Time Bandit, forcing the boat to return to port for repairs.

10. Trials of the Greenhorns
In rough seas and cold weather that causes ice to build up, the greenhorn on the Wizard hits his breaking point and walks off the deck, leaving the rest of the crew to pick up his duties. The Cornelia Marie hurries to pull up her pots before a storm hits. While pulling full pots, but with mostly rejects, the Farwest Leader's port engine breaks. The crew shut down the engine and chain the shaft. Captain Moncrief decides to continue fishing with one engine, but switches from fishing bairdi to opilio crab. Pulling full pots that were set back on the the same spot inspires Captain Sig Hansen of the Northwestern to swap jobs with his brother and work the deck, something he has not done for over twenty years. Meanwhile, their greenhorn tries to prove himself by working the rail and then learns a lesson on fishing "old school style" with no hydraulics after Deck Boss Edgar Hansen hears him complaining. At Dutch Harbor, Captain Andy Hillstrand dives to clear the tangled line from the shaft of the Time Bandit. While the work is being done, a crewmember is arrested for an outstanding warrant, but the crew bails him out so he can return to fishing.

11. Ice and Open Water
After scouting for the pack ice, Captain Sig of the Northwestern hurries to pull and reset his pots before they get covered in ice. The cold and long hours affect the Northwestern's greenhorn and he reaches his breaking point. Fishing on one engine slows the Farwest Leader, but the boat brings up full pots. However, the captain's decision to carefully sort the crab causes the deck boss to become grumpy. Captain Andy Hillstrand turns over the Time Bandit to his brother Johnathan after an emergency requires Andy to return to his horse farm in Indiana. With Johnathan at the helm, the boat pulls up huge numbers of crab and heads home early after catching their quota. Aboard the Cornelia Marie, the greenhorn gains new respect for tossing the hook and working the rail after discovering it is not as easy as it looks. On the Farwest Leader, an emergency with the captain's wife distracts the crew and they launch a pot without notifying the captain. This causes concern that they might have run over the pot and tangled the line, but keelhauling a line shows that there is no pot. As the Time Bandit heads in to St. Paul for their final offload, they run into the pack ice.

12. A Frozen Finish
The Time Bandit carefully made its way through the pack ice to the processing boat Independence at St. Paul Island. As the boat tried to leave St. Paul, it ran into too much ice and was forced return to St. Paul and spent a tense night near the beach where the Alaskan Monarch ran aground in 1990 in the same conditions. Aboard the Wizard, the greenhorn continued to lag behind and left the deck for the second time after being reprimanded by the captain. After the other greenhorn picked up the slack, Captain Monty Colburn decided to give him a bonus out of his own share. The Farwest Leader had a lot of dead loss, but still managed to have a good season. Aboard the Cornelia Marie, the captain and his two sons had their annual line coiling contest and the surprise winner was Josh, the boat's greenhorn. The Northwestern packed her holds full of crab, but then busted a hydraulic line on their crane. After offloading, the crew decided that their greenhorn earned the boat jacket that was his goal for the season and Captain Sig Hanson gave the greenhorn the jacket off his back.

After The Catch Special - "Overboard"
The series opens with some of the Bering Sea's greatest stories of successful and failed rescue attempts. Spike Walker himself will retell the great Master Carl story, and the ship's two survivors will meet in person for the first time since their rescue over 30 years ago. The fishermen will talk about their own losses at sea, and they'll get a chance to swap stories with two of the greatest Coast Guard personnel ever: superstar chopper pilots Jimmy Ng and Laura Guth. As always, there will be no shortage of laughs, as the guys inflate a raft (at the table) and make Mike wear a survival suit.
